Our FAQ’s
Most Commonly Asked Questions from Our Clients
Why Manufacture in Asia over Australia?
- Lower Labor Costs
- Asia (especially countries like China, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia) offers significantly lower labour costs compared to Australia. This makes production much cheaper, especially for industries that rely on high-volume, labor-intensive processes.
- Australia, while having a skilled workforce, has relatively high wages and labour-related costs, which can make manufacturing more expensive.
- Economies of Scale
- Asia, particularly countries with established manufacturing hubs like China, Taiwan, and India, benefits from economies of scale. Large factories and well-established supply chains lead to lower unit costs, making mass production more cost-effective.
- Australia, being a smaller market with fewer manufacturing giants, doesn’t have the same scale advantages, which means higher costs per unit.
- Established Supply Chains and Infrastructure
- Asia has highly developed manufacturing ecosystems and infrastructure that have been built up over decades. From raw materials to labour and specialised machinery, these supply chains are efficient, reliable, and relatively inexpensive.
- Australia has more limited manufacturing capacity, which can lead to longer lead times and higher costs for sourcing materials, building specialised machinery, or finding skilled workers.
- Access to Raw Materials
- Many Asian countries have abundant access to raw materials and natural resources, making them ideal for industries like electronics, textiles, and automotive. They are often located close to the source of these materials, reducing costs and transportation time.
- Australia does have resources, but its proximity to major global manufacturing hubs is less favourable, which can increase transport costs.
- Government Incentives and Trade Agreements
- Many Asian countries offer tax breaks, subsidies, or other incentives to attract foreign companies to manufacture within their borders. China’s “Made in China 2025” policy, for instance, promotes high-tech manufacturing, while countries like Vietnam and Thailand also offer competitive incentives for foreign businesses.
- Australia does offer incentives, but they tend to be more limited and focused on certain industries, making the overall cost of manufacturing there higher.
- Market Access and Proximity
- Asia is a major consumer market for many products, especially electronics, textiles, and automobiles. Manufacturing there allows companies to be closer to these large markets, reducing shipping time and costs and allowing for faster delivery to consumers.
- For products sold in Asia or global markets, manufacturing locally in Asia means better access to those markets without the added cost of shipping from a distant country like Australia.
- Flexibility and Speed
- Asian factories, particularly those in countries like China, are often more flexible in terms of adapting to high-volume production or rapid changes in product design. They are geared toward fast prototyping and large-scale manufacturing, making it easier to scale production quickly.
- In Australia, manufacturing speed can be slower due to the limited capacity and higher regulatory oversight, which can create longer lead times for production.
- Cost of Energy and Utilities
- Energy costs in some Asian countries can be significantly lower than in Australia, which helps reduce the overall production cost. For energy-intensive industries like metalworking or electronics manufacturing, this can be a major factor.
- Australia’s energy costs can be higher, particularly in sectors like manufacturing and mining.
- Product Complexity
- In some cases, products that are highly specialized or require advanced technology (e.g., electronics, automotive parts) may be more easily and cost-effectively produced in Asia, where there are specialized factories and experienced workforces.
- While Australia has a highly skilled workforce, it may not have the same depth of specialised expertise or equipment for certain high-volume manufacturing sectors.
- Trade and Globalisation
- With globalisation, it’s easier than ever to manage production across borders. Many companies now have global supply chains that extend into Asia. For example, components may be sourced from multiple countries and then assembled in another country, all while being managed remotely.
- For companies targeting global markets, manufacturing in Asia offers proximity to major international shipping lanes, lower import/export tariffs (through free trade agreements), and the ability to stay competitive with global pricing.
Why Choose Fibreglass over other Substrates?
- Weight
- Fibreglass: Lighter than aluminum, which makes it a good choice for applications where weight is a concern (e.g., boats, certain types of vehicles).
- Strength-to-Weight Ratio
- Fibreglass: Fibreglass is resistance to many work loads and has the ability to flex without cracking.
- Corrosion Resistance
- Fiberglass: Highly resistant to corrosion, which makes it ideal for environments exposed to moisture (e.g., marine applications).
- Durability
- Fibreglass: Very durable and resilient to impact. With the correct coating, fibreglass is highly UV stable and will not yellow.
- Ease of Manufacturing and Repair
- Fibreglass: Can be moulded into complex shapes, and is easy and cheap to repair.
- Insulation Properties
- Fibreglass: Fibreglass is a good insulator (both thermal and acoustic). This makes the end product for applications where noise or temperature control is important.
- Cost
- Fibreglass: Generally cheaper to manufacture, which can lower the cost for products made with fibreglass.
What is a Fibreglass Plug?
1) Positive Plug;
This is a full-size model or prototype of the part you want to make, and it’s used as the mold from which you’ll create the final part. It’s the “positive” shape, meaning it has the exact dimensions of the final product.
2) Negative Plug:
This is a mould that’s taken from the original plug, meaning the part will be the opposite of the original model. You would use this to create the actual production part.
What is a Fibreglass Mould?
A fibreglass mould is a hollow form or structure made from fibreglass used to shape or replicate parts, typically made from composite materials like fibreglass, resin, or other similar substances. It’s essentially the negative or inverse of the part you want to create. Once the mould is formed, you can use it to produce multiple copies of the same part by adding materials such as fibreglass, resin, or even other composites to the mould.
